his right eye at age15 when he was hit by a stray
air rifle BB. He has become Mark's personal
trainer.
Wife: Kathy, married in 1984, divorced
1988.
Children: Son. Matthew, 10, is a
Cardinals' bat boy lives with Kathy.
His Career-
Transactions:
- Drafted by the Montreal Expos in the
eight round on June 8, 1981. Did not sign
and went to Southern Cal on a pitcher's
scholarship. Later changed to a first and
third baseman.
- While at USC, also pitched and played
first base for the Glacier Pilots of
Anchorage, Alaska, and American Legion
team.
- Drafted by the Oakland A's in the first
round (10th overall) on June 4, 1984 as a
first and third baseman.
- Became a free agent Oct. 26 1992.
- Signed to a three-year deal by Oakland on
Dec 24, 1992.
- Traded from Oakland to St. Louis on July
31, 1997 for Pitchers T.J. Matthews, Eric
Ludwick, and Blake Stein.
- Signed by Cardinals to a three-year
contract, Sept. 16, 1997. The contract
was worth $30 million, but he gets only
$7million per year. He deferred $2
million per season and gave away $3
million over the next three years to his
Mark McGwire Foundation for Children (
the address is listed at the bottom of
the page).

Player of the Year: Named in 1984 by The
Sporting News. as the first baseman on their
All-American team.
Silver Medal: Played on the 1984 U.S.
Olympic Team in Los Angeles, where he was third
on the team in homeruns (6), RBI (26) and batting
(.391). Led the team with 13 doubles.
